“The Cheerleader,” Rob Hickerson, returns

Cardinal fans saw a familiar face on the video wall during Wednesday’s night victory over Villanova. Rob Hickerson, the man known for inventing and popularizing the CARDS cheer made his way down to the student section during the under-4 timeout of the second half and led a pair of rousing cheers with the already frenzied home crowd. Hickerson had been noticeably quiet since the move from Freedom Hall to his new seat in the KFC Yum! Center up in Section 311.

"Who the hell is this guy?" --Random Student Somewhere in Student Section

Someone needed to get the students to slow the CARDS cheer down, and Hickerson finally served that purpose. He seemed baffled at how fast they have been doing the cheer in his absence. It’s about being strong, loud and deliberate, not fast and reckless. The students were equally baffled by his clapping cheer, it seemed. Fans that frequented games at Freedom Hall, still, were all too familiar with him and his cheers.

A lot changed about Louisville basketball after the move downtown. It’s unfortunate that the visibility of such great fans like Hickerson (as well as “referee-shirt guy” Stuart Grossman and the “Cha-Cha” guy, for that matter) has been hindered since Louisville Basketball’s relocation. Here’s to hoping we see more of Mr. Hickerson (and the others) at the KFC Yum! Center, this season and in the future.
