The University of Louisville recently proved their commitment to Charlie Strong by extending his deal. Next up for the coaching staff is shoring up the offensive coordinator position. I am sure there are going to be plenty of young offensive minded coaches that are ready to join Strong’s staff. Yet, let’s look at what is needed and expected on the offensive side of the ball.
1. Bring Back The Passing Game
Since the late 90′s Louisville has been home to several big arms. Chris Redman threw over 3000 yds three times and 29 TD’s twice. Dave Ragone had passing td totals of 27,23, and 24. Brian Brohm threw for 30 TD in 2007. These type of numbers are mind boggling when you consider that in 2008 Hunter Cantwell threw for only 16, in 2009 the real estate firm of Froman and Burke only threw for 9, and 22 in 2010 (between 3 QB’s). This is a direct result of Kragthorpe not being able to recruit. The Cardinal’s offense went from a top 5 offense during the Petrino era and bottomed out heading into the new decade. We need an OC that can use his tools and get the passing game off the ground. The building blocks are there with great young talent (Bridgwater, Parker,Brown,Harris) thanks to Charlie Strong and Clint Hurtt.
2. Be A BOSS
The way it looks, Charlie Strong is looking for a manager for the offense. Coach Strong doesn’t need someone that will have to rely on him to make decisions and game plan. Charlie Strong, has a chore of his own, in building a defensive program that can compete on a national level ( currently 16th in Points Against). We are used to offensive coaches ie. John L Smith,Bobby Petrino that are offensive minds who tend to lean on the DC to make their own decisions. I think Coach Strong is just the opposite. He wants someone who can handle the day to day duties of the offense.
3.Don’t Put Cards fans to sleep
We all want to win, but Louisville fans don’t want to win games 16-9. Yes it would be better to win than lose but I think we have the young talent to have a high flying offense once again. It just seems so long ago when the Cards were averaging in the 40′s and winning! Obviously we just want to start winning again, but who doesn’t want to win in style?
4. Recruiting Skills
The OC may not be a lead in many of the recruiting trips but he can play an amazing role in bringing top talent that fit the scheme. Part of that ability to bring in talent will be based on your ability to get kids to the next level and to bring positive national attention to your side of the ball. You have to be able to work with Coach Strong and the recruiters in selecting talent that will move the program forward.
5. Young and Fun
I love watching Charlie Strong on the sidelines. He has a great personality and amazing demeanor that his players buy into. After watching Jim Harbaugh after the Nineres win, in the locker room, I know that this is the excitement we need. Coach Strong brings this to the table and I think it has helped the defensive side of ball. Bringing this to the offensive side will be a major plus.
Burt Reynolds Take
Listen, there is no one that has scored more than this ol’ boy. I mean I was Coach Wood Newton…COACH WOOD NEWTON! I like this Strong fella, he has a good smile the ladies like and I bet a firm handshake to let the guys know he means business. These Cardinals need someone who is going to move up and down the field like they was moving white lightening, if Gator McKluskey was available I am sure he would get them boys moving!
Burts Final Thought
Winners score and the Cardinals need to win.
*Burt Reynolds has never said these words in this order and is not affilated with Straitpinkie…but he would if he knew us.
